Everyone, including myself, was looking forward to the 2011 Deer Hunting Season. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission extended the 2011 Deer Hunting Season by one week, making it a 5 week season. They also changed the limit to 5 Deer, which all 6 may be Does and no more than 2 legal Bucks’ and a legal Buck must have 3 points on one side.
The 2010 Season produced a lower than expected kill totals, which in turn, according to the Game and Fish Commission, created and abundance of Does. However, the 2011 Season has been another poor Hunting Season, and, at last count, the number of Deer taken is even down from the 2010 Season.
If you ask, most hunters, how their hunt went, they will quickly tell you not good! Everyone is saying that the Deer isn’t moving and must be feeding on acorns and at night. No one seems to see Deer during the day. Although, some Deer are being taken, the count remains way down from previous seasons.
Unlike previous years, where corn was a huge attractant, they seem to shy away from corn this year, allowing corn to just pile up under the corn feeders. It is believed that the Acorn crop is extremely large this year and the Deer are feeding more on Acorns.
I have personally taken 3 Deer the first 2 days of the modern gun season, but went for 3 weeks after opening day and haven’t seen any Deer at all. The attempt to thin out the over abundance of Does, appears to be a failure. Well, that makes me curious about what will happen, as far as regulations and limits, for the 2012 Season.
Deer Corn has always been the hunter’s favorite Deer attractant, but it seem to be a waste of money this year, and the cost per bag has gone thru the roof! Maybe the Deer will still get a chance to eat the corn that has been dumped on the ground as the Hunters end their 2011 hunting adventure. At least, the Turkey will have something to eat.
The inability to see Deer is wide spread throughout the State, for example, my home is 125 miles north of our hunting area, and I have always taken a Deer from my backyard, but this year I have not seen any Deer at all.
I still believe that the Game and Fish Commission mails out their yearly handbook, with the update regulations, limits and Dates, to the Deer prior to making them accessible to the general public.
What has happened to the Deer population this year, well, no one really knows. Maybe in time, the Game and Fish will figure it out for us. It might even be that the season opened to early.
Once again, the 2011 Season wasn’t very successful as far as the number of Deer taken is concerned, however, that alone does not determine the success of the Hunting season. Even if no Deer was taken, the season would still be a successful. This is a once a year event that you have the opportunity to get together with Friends and Family in one Camp to have fun and enjoy each other’s company, and will never change due to the lack of game taken.
I would like to personally thank all who checked on me when I would be a little late coming in from our morning and evening hunt to make sure that I was safe.
